Safety, equipment, and other stuff to keep in mind.

When entering these tunnels we suggest the following equipment:

Clothing:

When entering the steam tunnels, we suggest you wear old clothes. Long pants are good, as are long sleeve shirts. Unfortunately, the heat from the pipes makes all that stuff uncomfortable, and I go in short sleeves. So, I can't really press that one. Also, helmets are a good idea, but they are hard to explain to cops and people who see you walking to and from the entry/exit point. You have to find the point in between usefulness, and practicality. Some people like gloves, I don't, but some people do. Boots are a good idea too, since you'll be walking for a long time and your feet will hurt in sneakers. I'm not going to tell you to not wear sandles, since if you do, you've earned what's comming to you.

Lighting:

Lights are mandatory! There are overhead lights in the tunnels, but if you turn them on they set off alarms. So don't use 'em! We like head mounted lights; you can get them for about seven bucks at Wal-mart and they're waterproof.. We also suggest at least one spare flashlight pr. person just in case your light overheats or runs out of batteries. Believe me, those things can get scalding hot if you go into some of the heat areas. Heat burns out lightbulbs. Also, lanterns are no good. They cast so many shadows that they are more annoying than anything else. Plus, they are hard to carry, both in and out of the tunnels.

Safety precautions:

Just in case of a minor injury, we suggest lugging along a small first aid kit. Smashing fingers in the grates, or brushing against the wrong (superheated) pipe can make you wish you had one, and we've seen enough of that sort of boo-boo on our adventures. When you go in, tell someone where you are going, and when you 'll be back. Give them a time that if you haven't contacted them by that time, to send in the rescue squad. Getting a first time trespassing violation is worth not dying!

Things to keep in mind:

Please remember that what you are doing is illegal, so be relatively covert. And we have a policy that says NEVER, EVER, EVER DAMAGE ANYTHING! I mean, come on. Vandalism isn't cool, it's stupid. And besides, if you damage something down there, then they will close the tunnels up even more and that's no good. Down there you have access to a major section of the power grid, so don't go hanging on any wires or anything. Also, don't take anything; everything there is there for a reason, or it's being stored for a reason. Don't go into any of the buildings unless you know what you are doing, because many of them have alarm systems and all night janitors.

Other stuff:

Have fun! Also, don't do anything stupid. Like leaving a grate open, or leaving a door unlocked. Don't take too many people, because large groups are dangerous in and of themselves. To add to that, NEVER GO IN ALONE! Ummm.... Have fun!
